Poland
Poland is located approximately 7 miles southeast of Youngstown in Mahoning County, and consists of Poland Village and Poland Township. Poland Village covers a land area of 1.65 square miles with a population of 2,555 at the 2010 census. Poland Township's land area is 21.2 miles, and the population at the 2010 census was 14,960.
Charming Poland Village is characterized by tree-lined streets and older homes, many of them restored historical homes. The township is where most of the newer housing developments are located. Housing ranges from large estates, to smaller and mid-size family homes, villas and condos.
In 1796 Poland Township became the first charted township in the Connecticut Western Reserve, the south easternmost portion, or Town One, Range One.The village of Poland was founded in 1866.
Poland Seminary, founded over 200 years ago, was originally a private secondary school, Poland Academy, and then a liberal arts college. Its main building has been incorporated into Poland Middle School on College Street. The former medical school and law school is now a private residence also on College Street. Its dormitory is incorporated into the Poland Public Library on Main Street.
Poland Municipal Forest, a 250 acre national wildlife preserve, often referred to as "Poland Woods", lies at the end of College Lane in the center of the village. The original acreage was a gift to the village from Mrs. Henry Audubon Butler in 1935 with the stipulation that the forest be maintained as a natural wildlife preserve and bird sanctuary. Since that time, other donations and purchases have increased the Poland Municipal Forest to its present size. The woods have many foot trails throughout, enabling pedestrians, bikers, and equestrians to enjoy its year-round beauty.
The Poland Local School District currently has three elementary schools for grades K-4: North, Dobbins, and Union. Poland also has an elementary school for 5th and 6th graders, Poland McKinley, named after the former U.S. President William McKinley. Poland Middle School is home for the 7th and 8th grade classes and Poland Seminary High School houses the 9th through 12th grades. Poland Schools has earned the designation"Excellent with Distinction" from the State of Ohio Department of Education. The Lady Bulldogs girls softball team won the OHSAA Division II state championship in 2011.
A Catholic school located in Poland, Holy Family, serves children in pre-kindergarten through the 8th grade.
